El Cajon, Calif. – This team! The Mt. SAC Women's Softball Team has been incredibly fun to watch this season as they continue stacking win after win. Friday was no different, as the Mounties rolled to a 9–2 victory over Grossmont College, improving to 17–2 overall and a perfect 9–0 in South Coast Conference play. Meanwhile, the Griffins fall to 10–9 overall and 3–2 in the Pacific Coast Conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Wasting no time, Marti Ann Leach put the Mounties on the board in the top of the first with a double to center field that scored Sarai Raygoza. Just moments later, Leach crossed the plate herself on a wild pitch to give Mt. SAC a quick 2–0 lead.

Mt. SAC doubled their advantage in the fourth inning. Desiree Morales lifted a sacrifice fly to left field that allowed Sophia Avina to score, and a single from Raygoza brought home Kayla Mendoza, pushing the Mounties ahead 4–0. In the sixth inning, Hailey Montoya added another run, racing home on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 5–0.

Grossmont attempted to chip away in the bottom of the sixth. A single from Elizabeth Stephenson and a bunt from Jass Regas helped the Griffins score twice, narrowing the gap to 5–2.

But the Mounties answered back with a vengeance in the top of the seventh adding four more runs to seal the dominant victory. Mendoza reached base on an error by the Griffins' first baseman, allowing Emily Sandoval to score. Doubles from Morales and Raygoza followed, bringing home Natalie Valiente and Morales to cap off the Mounties' scoring.

And in the circle, Zoe Herford was simply outstanding. The right-handed freshman went the full seven innings to earn her ninth win of the season, facing 26 batters and throwing 69 strikes on 91 pitches (nearly 76%). She allowed just four hits and two runs, while walking none and striking out six.

Grossmont used three pitchers in the game, combining to allow nine hits, nine runs, and six walks, while recording just one strikeout.
