Walnut, Calif. – The No. 4 ranked Mt. SAC Women's Softball team delivered their most explosive offensive performance of the season Thursday afternoon, overwhelming Compton College 17-2 in a five-inning run-rule victory on February 26.
With this win, the Mounties improve to 13-1 overall, with eight victories ending early due to the mercy rule, and they remain perfect in South Coast Conference play at 7-0. The Coyotes fall to 3-11 overall and 0-6 in conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Mounties jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after the first inning behind a single from Amanda Porterfield and doubles from Emily Sandoval and Kayla Mendoza. The second inning was almost a copy and paste with RBI hits from Porterfield and Sandoval once again as the Mounties extended their lead to 6-0.
Compton broke through in the top of the third when Sarah Aguilar reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Johanna Vidales to score and cut the deficit to 6-1.
But the Mounties responded in a major way, with their most lucrative inning of the game, more than doubling the score. Sarai Raygoza singled to left-center to bring home Hailey Montoya and Brooklyn Game. Later, Porterfield was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing in another run to make it 9-1.
As Compton struggled to get out of the inning, the offensive onslaught continued. Sandoval ripped a double to left field to score two more runs, Mendoza followed with an RBI single, and the Mounties capitalized on a passed ball and a Compton error to stretch the lead to 15-1.
Just waiting to hit that fifth inning mercy rule, the Mounties added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Mendoza drove in Vanessa Tamayo with a sacrifice fly, and Natalie Valiente singled home Sophia Sanchez to push the score to 17-1.
Compton managed to add one more run in the top of the fifth on a single from Amy Duarte, but the damage had long been done as the run rule ended the game.
Vanessa Hawks earned the start for the Mounties, working three innings while allowing three hits and one earned run. She walked three and struck out five. Karissa Blanco closed out the final two innings, allowing one run while striking out two to secure the victory.
