Walnut, Calif. – It was a full-on blowout of a game, when the Mt. SAC Softball Team completely overwhelmed previously undefeated Long Beach City College, 15-0, in just four and a half innings due to the run rule. With this impressive showing, the Mounties improve to 7-1 overall and remain perfect at 3-0 in South Coast Conference play. The loss marked the first of the season for the Vikings, who now sit at 7-1 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Mounties opened the scoring with a bang when Sophia Sanchez launched a two-run homer in the bottom of the second to put Mt. SAC on the board.
But the third inning is where things really got exciting for Mt. SAC fans in the crowd, with the Mounties added a whopping 13 runs.
Singles from Amanda Porterfield, Emily Sandoval, and Marti Ann Leach stretched the lead to 5-0 and set the tone for what would become an inning-long surge.
Capitalizing on Viking miscues, the Mounties continued to pile on. Isabella Aspeitia reached on a fielder's choice to score Sandoval. Natalie Valiente was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing home Leach. Moments later, Angelina Martinez drew a walk to plate Aspeitia, extending the advantage to 9-0.
The lineup turned over — and the scoring didn't stop.
Porterfield nailed a two-run double to score Valiente and Sanchez. Sandoval followed with an RBI single to bring in Martinez.
Then, fittingly, the inning ended the same way the scoring began — with a home run. This time it was Sophia Avina, who blasted a three-run shot to left field, driving in Sandoval and Porterfield to cap the 13-run inning and push the Mounties to their highest scoring game of the season.
Zoe Herford delivered another solid performance, going the distance in the five-inning shutout. She faced 20 batters, allowed just two hits, walked three, and struck out three while keeping the Vikings from capitalizing in the batter's box.
Long Beach cycled through three pitchers but struggled to slow the Mountie offense, which stayed aggressive from first pitch to final out.
