Walnut, Calif. – The Mt. SAC Women's Softball Team delivered a commanding 18-0 win over Rio Hondo in a conference matchup on Tuesday, February 18. With this dominant performance, the Mounties improve to 6-4 on the season, while the Roadrunners drop to 2-8.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Mt. SAC wasted no time asserting control, exploding for ten runs in the first inning. Sarai Raygoza opened the scoring, crossing home on a Samantha Orozco single to left field. A series of Rio Hondo errors allowed Mia Martin, Morgan Kneubuhler, and Orozco to score, quickly making it 4-0. Isabella Aspeitia followed with an RBI single, bringing in Katie Griego, before Raygoza crushed an inside-the-park home run to drive in Vyanca Clark and Aspeitia. The inning concluded with a Vanessa Tamayo single to center, plating Desiree Morales and Martin for an impressive 10-0 lead.
The Mounties continued their offensive surge in the second, tacking on four more runs after key hits from Samantha Chavez, Kiana Kadena, and Hailey Montoya. In the third, Griego's RBI single scored Tamayo, and a sacrifice fly by Natalie Valiente allowed Kamyla Cerda to cross home, extending the lead to 16-0. Mt. SAC capped off their scoring in the fourth with a Tamayo double that brought in Montoya, followed by a sacrifice fly from Cerda to score Morales.
Pitchers Mariah Figueroa and Samantha Vizcarra combined for a shutout, allowing just one hit while recording four strikeouts and no walks. The game ended in the fifth inning via the run rule, with Mt. SAC leading by eight or more runs.
