(Saratoga, CA) The Mt. SAC Softball team scored its first run and won its first game in the 3C2A State Championships Friday afternoon, May 17, over Cosumnes River, 4-2, at West Valley College.

After an 8-0 shutout loss to North No. 1 Seed San Joaquin Delta in the opening game Thursday (May 16), the Mounties rebounded with a win in a must-win game in the double-elimination tournament.

No. 4 South Seed Mt. SAC (38-6) wasted little time scoring, as freshman shortstop Katie Griego (2-2, R, 2 RBIs, Sac Fly) opened the game with a solo home run (5th of the year) to left-center for the 1-0 lead.

Cosumnes River tied the game, 1-1, in the second, but Mt. SAC came back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Freshman left fielder Gabrielle Flores (RBI) knocked in freshman catcher Morgan Kneubuhler (2-3, R, Dbl.) to take a 2-1 lead, followed by a throwing error by the Hawks, scoring sophomore center fielder Rianna De La Barcena to lead 3-1.

The fourth run came across on a line-out to left field by Griego, scoring sophomore second baseman Amanda Esquivel for the 4-1 lead.

Picking up her 12th win of the season, against only two losses, was sophomore pitcher Alyssa Rubalcava, with the first save of the season going to sophomore Aleyna Urbina.

Cosumnes added a solo run in the fourth.
