Mt. SAC Softball Defeats El Camino, 5-1, in 3C2A So Cal Regional Opener

(Walnut, CA) The Mt. SAC Softball team moved one step closer to a return to the 3C2A State Championship tournament with a 5-1 win over visiting El Camino College in the 3C2A So Cal Regional Finals on Friday, May 10.

The Mounties (35-8), who have advanced to the state championships 15 times and have won six titles, trailed, 1-0 in the fourth inning. They scored two in the bottom half of the inning and another three in the sixth for the win.

Mt. SAC sophomore pitcher Aleyna Urbina picked up her 13th win of the season going six innings, scattering eight hits, and striking out three. Sophomore Alyssa Rubalcava relieved Urbina in the seventh inning.

Home runs led the way for the Mounties in the victory, as Mercedes Alba (1-3, R, 2 RBIs) hit a two-run shot, scoring third baseman Janis Espinoza (2-3, 2 Rs, 2 RBIs) in the fourth for the 2-1 lead.

Espinoza hit a two-run home run in the third, scoring freshman shortstop Sofia Femath, who came in for Katie Griego, who was injured on an infield grounder earlier in the game.

Right fielder Mia Martin, who was on third, scored the third run of the inning after a throw to second by the El Camino catcher trying to cut down Mt. SAC base runner Morgan Kneubuhler.
