Mt. SAC Softball splits two with Cypress

(Cypress, CA) With the season winding down, the Mt. SAC Softball team split a pair with rival Cypress College Friday afternoon, winning the opener, 5-3 and losing 15-3 in five innings in the second game at Cypress.

The two teams will play another doubleheader Thursday (May 27) at Cypress.

The first game saw the Mounties take the early lead with four runs in the first two innings and hold on for the win as Cypress rallied for three late runs.

Leading the way for the Mounties was sophomore left fielder Valerie Alcala (2 for 3) with two hits in the game and a two-run home run by sophomore right fielder Mikenna Barcelona (1 for 3, HR, R, 2 RBI).

Freshman shortstop Ariana Coronado (1 for 3) had a single and two RBIs.

Freshman pitcher Grace Pieson picked up the win, pitching 4 2/3 innings, scattering five hits and three runs and struck out five Chargers.

Sophomore Lauren Avalos finished the last 2 1/3 innings, allowing only a single and struck out two batters for the save.

Getting the Mounties on the board in the first inning was a run-scoring single by centerfielder Emily Barba, driving in second baseman Ryan Brizo and an RBI on a ground out by Coronado for the 2-0 lead.

Barcelona gave the Mounties the 4-0 lead with her first home run of the season in the second, scoring catcher Brooke De La O.

A fifth run, for the 5-0 lead, came across in the fifth inning on a single to center field by Coronado, scoring pinch-runner Brianna Mills. Mills came in to run for first baseman Alyssa Castaneda (1 for 4) who singled.

Cypress rallied for three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

In the second game, it was all Chargers as they sent 15 batters to the plate in the fifth inning, scoring 11 runs on nine hits.

Cypress led 4-0 in the fourth, but the Mounties cut the lead in half with two runs, to trail 4-2.

Freshman Tatiana Garcia (1 for 2, RBI) singled in Barba (1 for 2, R, SB) and the second run came across as Alcala (1 for 2) reached on an error and Alyssa Gonzalez scored for the second run.

Shortstop Natalie Gonzalez (1 for 1, RBI) singled in the third run in the fifth inning, scoring Mills (1 for 1, R).
