Mt. SAC Men’s Cross Country Opens Season with Strong Finish at Mark Covert Classic

Brea, Calif. – The Mt. SAC Men's Cross Country Team kicked off their 2025 season with a solid showing at the Mark Covert Classic, held at Carbon Canyon Regional Park on Saturday, August 30. Running an 8k course against a competitive field that included several strong four-year programs like Cal State Fullerton, Chapman and Whittier, the Mounties placed fourth overall.

Cal State Fullerton, who hosted the event, took first place with a team score of 32 points. Mt. SAC earned a total of 106 points, with a collective team time of 2:05:21, averaging 25:05 per runner and a 5:03 mile pace. Their 5-man gap was a tight 38 seconds, showing an impressive depth and cohesiveness in the squad.

Leading the pack for Mt. SAC was Diego Varela, who finished 13th overall with a time of 24:40.8. He was closely followed by Logan Berkley in 21st (25:02.5), Derek Campos in 23rd (25:08.2), Antonio Alcantar in 25th (25:10.4) and Isaac Donis in 29th (25.18.3). Rounding out the top seven were Ethan McGarry in 39th (25:46.2) and Alex Figueroa in 43rd (25:48.7).

The Mounties will look to build on this strong start as they head to the Oxnard Invitational on Friday, September 5.
