Mt. SAC’s Capetillo Wins 8K Mark Covert Classic; Team Places Third

(Brea, CA) Mt. SAC sophomore cross country runner Salvador Capetillo, competing against Club and University athletes, finished in first place in the opening race of the season in the Mark Covert Classic, hosted by Cal State University Fullerton on Saturday September 1.

As a team, the Mounties finished third overall with 59 points, just nine points out of first. They also finished ahead of all other community college teams.

In The 8K race, which was held at the Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea and featured 180 runners, the Mounties finished ahead of three Club teams and four University teams.

Mt. SAC had two runners in the top ten (Capetillo, Luis Huerta – 9th) and two more in the top fifteen (Christopher Weiland – 13th, Colby Penn – 15th).

Rounding out the fifth runner for the Mounties to gain points was sophomore Ralph Mendoza (21st). The sixth and seventh finishers for Mt. SAC were Vincent Orta (28th) and Isaiah Wilson (32nd). Mt. SAC entered 23 runners in the race.

They will travel to Fresno next Saturday September 8 for the annual Fresno Invitational at Woodland Park, the site of the CCCAA State Championships in November.
