Chula Vista, Calif. – The Mt. SAC Men's Water Polo Team concluded the Southwestern College Tournament with two hard-fought victories on Friday, November 1. The Mounties first defeated Grossmont 12-10 and then edged past Palomar 14-12, setting the tone for the upcoming South Coast Conference Championships. With these wins, their overall record now stands at 16-13 and 2-3 in conference play.
In the match against Grossmont, Jack Painton and Trevor Davis each scored three goals, contributing significantly to the Mounties' success. The team achieved a shooting percentage of 46.2%, going 12 for 26, while goalkeeper Zayd Karim made nine saves and recorded four steals, bolstering the team's defense. Grossmont managed a shooting percentage of 37%, going 10 for 27, and only recorded one block compared to Mt. SAC's eleven.
In the game against Palomar, Nicolas Flores and Davis excelled with three goals each, while Michael McMillan and Nicolas Lara contributed two goals apiece. The Mounties maintained a shooting percentage of 46.7%, converting 14 of 30 attempts. Goalkeepers Henry De Luna and Karim combined for ten saves to keep the team in front. Palomar recorded a shooting percentage of 44.4%, going 12 for 27, but only managed three saves.
Looking ahead, the Mounties will compete against Rio Hondo in the first round of the South Coast Conference Championships. Rio Hondo currently holds an 8-16 overall record and a 1-4 conference record. The championship games will take place at Mt. SAC from November 7-9. Go Mounties!
