Men’s Water Polo split four games at the Cuesta Invitational

(San Luis Obispo, CA) The Mt. SAC Men's Water Polo team traveled North to San Luis Obispo to the 43rd Annual Cuesta Arena Invitational at Cuesta College on Friday and Saturday (September 23, 24) and split four games.

The Mounties (7-10) defeated Riverside City College, 10-7, and Ventura, 18-4, but fell to Golden West, 14-5, along with L.A. Valley, 7-6.

Leading the way in the four games was freshman Brandon Fabrega with 12 goals, followed by Zack Ewing (6), EJ Lynch (6) and Aidan Murphy (5).

Fabrega increased his state-leading goal total to 69 as well as extended his steals lead over second place (132 to 75).

Mt. SAC 10, RCC 7

The Mounties opened the tournament with a victory over the Tigers. Fabrega led with four goals and three steals.

Goalie Noah Stark had 8 saves.

Leading, 7-4, at the half, the Mounties sealed the win with three goals in the fourth period.


Golden West 14, Mt. SAC 5

The CCCAA defending state champion Rustlers handled the Mounties with a big first half scoring 10 goals and holding the Mounties to four.

Fabrega led with four steals and a goal.


L.A. Valley 7, Mt. SAC 6

In the closest game of the tournament for the Mounties, Fabrega again led with three goals on seven shots and a steal. Trevor Ingersoll had two steals and a goal and Stark had his second, 8-save game.

The Mounties were shutout in the first half, while Valley led 3-0. They outscored Valley, 6-4 in the second half with a fourth-period rally.

Trailing, 6-3, to begin the fourth period, Ingersoll had a goal and two by Fabrega brought the Mounties within two, 7-5, with 56 seconds left in the game. Brandon scored with just one second left, to trail, 7-6 as time ran out.


Mt. SAC  18, Ventura 4

The third-highest goal output of the season led to a win over the Pirates.

Fabrega led with four goals, followed by three goals each from Lynch and Ewing.

The Mounties scored the first 10 goals of the game before Ventura could get in the scoring column.

Mt. SAC returns home and will have its annual alumni game on Wednesday (Sept. 28). The Mounties will continue with South Coast Conference action on Wednesday (Oct. 5).
