(Walnut, CA) After a long summer of preparing for the 2019 season, the Mt. SAC Men's Water Polo Team came out flying with a 23-6 win over visiting Cal Tech Tuesday afternoon (Sept. 10) at the Marie T. Mills Aquatics Center in the season opener.

The offense was spread out over 13 of the 20 field players on the team and were led by utility Jarrett Barker and attacker Nicholas Fabrega with four and three goals, respectively.

In addition, five players - Dillon Mannion, Ian Tauer, Noah Brokaw, Kyle Green and Matthew Hinson - scored a pair of goals.

Five of the Mountie players with multiple goals in the game were freshmen.

Three goalies saw time in the net for the Mounties, with sophomore Andres Mercado leading the way with eight saves.

Mt. SAC took a 14-3 halftime lead and cruised to the game-one win. In the game, the Mounties scored on 23 of 37 shots for a .622 shooting percentage.

"The kids played great," Mt. SAC Men's Water Polo Coach Marc Ruh said. "They were very excited to get this one under their belt."

"We are hoping to carry the excitement into the weekend back in Erie (Pennsylvania) and come home with some great experiences to build upon."

They begin with two games - Washington & Jefferson University and Mercyhurst - on Friday (Sept. 13), University of Toronto on Saturday (Sept. 14) and two more games on Sunday (Sept. 15) - Gannon University and Penn State Behrend.

Upon their return from their annual Eastern trip, the Mounties begin community college action in their own tournament, beginning Friday September 20.

Mt. SAC will host nine teams in the two-day, 46th Annual Tourney.
