(Norwalk, CA) It's been a wild last couple of games for the Mt. SAC Men's Water Polo Team in the South Coast Conference Championships held at Cerritos College November 1-3.
After a tough 5-4 loss to Cerritos in the semifinals that cost the Mounties a trip to the championship game, they had a marathon scoring game, defeating Chaffey College, 16-15, to finish third in the conference tournament.
Next stop – the CCCAA Southern California Regional Championships with a berth to the state tournament on the line.
The Mounties, seeded 10th, will play No. 7 seed Grossmont on Thursday at 3:15 pm at Cerritos College.
The top two teams in the 10-team So Cal's will advance to the state championships on November 16-17 at West Valley College in Northern California in Saratoga.
Jarrett Barker led the Mounties with four goals (2 Assists, 4 Steals), while three players – Jonathan Heredia, Noah Slack (2 Asst.) and Noah Brokaw (1 Steal) scored three goals each.
Cristian Lopez (3 Asst.) had a game-high five steals, while the Mounties totaled 15 thefts in the game.
After a 4-4 tie in the first period, the Mounties scored five in the second to the Panthers one goal for a 9-5 lead at the half.
But Chaffey came roaring back with five of its own in the third and the Mounties scored twice. Mt. SAC held an 11-10 lead going into the final period.
With the Mounties trailing 14-13 with only fifty three seconds remaining in the game, Slack took a pass from Lopez and scored to tie it at 14-14 and send it into OT.
Each team scored in the first overtime period, but the Mounties took advantage of a Chaffey exclusion and scored the extra-man goal by Heredia with one minute left in the overtime period and held on for the win.
