Mounties Fall to LBCC, 18-11; Finish Third in South Coast Conference

By John M. Sherrard

(LONG BEACH) The final regular season South Coast Conference game was an all-out offensive battle between two of the three top teams in the conference.

However, it was a tale of two halves, with the Mounties coming out on the short end losing to Long Beach City College, 18-11, Wednesday afternoon.

The Mounties led at the end of the first (5-3) and second periods (6-5), but a reversal took place in the second half with the Vikings outscoring Mt. SAC, 13-5, to win going away.

After a mini tournament this Friday the Mountie water polo team will turn its attention to the post season and the SCC Championship Tournament. Mt. SAC will likely be seeded third.

Leading the way for the Mounties like he has most of the season was utility man Scott McDill with five goals. The sophomore is currently the third-highest goal scorer in the state with 108 goals.

Sophomore utility man Jeffrey Silverberg (3 steals) added three goals and sophomore center Thomas Randles (3 steals) had two.

In the first period, McDill and Randles both had two goals for the Mounties as they led, 5-3, heading into the second period.

However, after a 7-6 lead on a goal by Randles at 6:45 in the third period, that would be the last time the Mounties would lead in the game.

The Mounties were down a pair of goals, 11-9, after three periods, but LBCC went on a 6-0 scoring spree to put the game out of reach, 17-9.

Mt. SAC will host a three-way mini tournament on Friday with the first game against Fullerton College at 10:00 a.m. Fullerton will play San Diego Mesa at noon, followed by a Mt. SAC SD Mesa contest at 2:00 p.m.
