Walnut, Calif. – The Mt. SAC Men's Track and Field Team delivered an electric showing at the 66th Annual Mt. SAC Relays on Saturday, April 11 at Hilmer Lodge Stadium, turning their home meet into a statement performance against top competition from across California.
With Mt. SAC set to host the 3C2A State Championships next month, the meet brought in elite talent eager to get a feel for the track—but it was the Mounties who made it clear this is their house.
And they didn't just compete, they impressed.
Leading the charge was Marques Guzman, who stole the spotlight with a dominant sprint double. Guzman blazed to first place in the 100 meters (10.52) and followed it up with another gold in the 200 meters (20.94), cementing himself as one of the fastest athletes on the track.
The Mounties showed serious depth across the board.
In the 400 meters, Rashad Martin and Dylan Ochoa went back-to-back with fourth- and fifth-place finishes, while the 800-meter group packed the leaderboard. Alfredo Vargas, Christian Guerra, and Jacob Duregger finished fourth, fifth, and sixth respectively—all within a second of each other in a tightly contested race.
The distance crew kept the momentum going. Lucas Blevins and Ethan Hufnagel both broke the four-minute mark in the 1500 meters, finishing fourth and fifth, while Diego Varela secured a podium spot in the 5000 meters with a third-place finish. Jacob Diaz added another top-three performance in the 3000-meter steeplechase.
On the relay side, the Mounties showed both speed and chemistry. The 4x100 relay squad raced to a strong fourth-place finish, while the 4x400 teams delivered one of the closest finishes of the day. Mt. SAC's B team edged into fourth at 3:19.90, just ahead of the A team, who crossed in fifth at 3:20.00—a blink-and-you-miss-it difference.
In the field events, the Mounties truly dominated.
Caleb Garcia soared to first place in the pole vault, reaching 15'3", while Ethan Johnson led a powerful long jump group with a winning mark of 23'9", followed closely by teammate Myles Massie in second. The triple jump was all about Mt. SAC as well, with Brandyn Wetherspoon claiming first at 49'7" and Michael Danna taking second.
Taiyo Ishiguro delivered one of the most impressive performances of the day in the javelin, launching a massive throw of 205'10"—blowing past the competition by over 30 feet.
Anik Singh (high jump, 6' 4.75"), Andres Lambarena (shot put, 52' 8.75"), and Oluwatoni Babatunde (discus, 156' 4") all added podium finishes, rounding out a well-balanced and dominant showing across events.
