Walnut, Calif. – After a close 5-4 loss to Orange Coast College last week, the Mt. SAC Men's Tennis Team picked themselves up, earning a 7-2 victory over Fullerton College on Tuesday, February 10. With the win, the Mounties improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Hornets fall to 2-3 overall.
The Mounties performed excellently in singles play, walking away with wins in four of the six matches. At the No. 1 position, Ben Villalobos delivered a composed performance, defeating Matt Doria 6-4, 6-2.
The most dramatic match of the day came at No. 3, where Rick Sun showed resilience after dropping the first set 0-6. Sun fought back to win a tight second set 7-6 before dominating the 10-2 tiebreaker to secure the victory.
Sage Romejko added another point in the No. 4 spot with a strong 6-3, 6-1 win over Jo Noirouny, and Jarred Millian capped off singles play at No. 6, cruising to a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Layden Stimmol.
Fullerton picked up points at No. 2 and No. 5, where Micah Welch and Zayniddin Khusanow battled but came up short.
The Mounties left no doubt in doubles competition, sweeping all three matches to seal the team victory.
At No. 1, the duo of Villalobos and Sun earned a 3-1 win by retirement over Doria and Alan Sim. In the No. 2 spot, Welch and Daniel Ochoa secured an 8-4 victory over Braydon Tonisto and Noirouny. Closing it out at No. 3, Khusanow and Millian delivered an emphatic 8-1 win over Kokoi and Stimmol.
NEXT UP:
The Mounties return home Friday, February 13, to host College of the Desert (0-2) at 1:00 p.m. as they look to continue building momentum early in the season.
