The 2024-2025 college soccer season is around the corner and Coach Juan Sanchez is excited about what the Mounties are bringing to the field. With eight returning players, including three starters from last year, the team is well-positioned for a strong season. A noteworthy addition to this year's team is incoming freshman Moises Prado, a standout forward from Total Futbol Academy, who led the country in scoring at the club level. Coach Sanchez will also be looking to sophomore Kenny Flores, an outside midfielder, to provide leadership with his on-field presence.
The team has been working diligently on their fitness and refining their skills, laying a solid foundation for the season. Beyond physical preparation, there is a concentrated focus on getting into the right mindset and establishing trust between players and coaches. Coach Sanchez emphasizes the importance of a "team first" mentality, urging players to prioritize collective goals rather than individual accolades and successes. He is also instilling the will to compete in each player. He believes that fostering a competitive mindset during practice will translate to success on the field when it counts.
Coach Sanchez's ultimate goal is to win the state championship and even the national title. He understands that achieving these aspirations begins with concentrating on daily improvements and building momentum game by game, which ultimately enables them to reach the next level. "But for us, we hold our program to that standard of getting to the state championship," Sanchez said. "We've been quite a few times, and that is always the goal." With a track record that includes six 3C2A Men's Soccer State Championships, 16 SCC championships, including the last seven consecutive titles, and five SCC Men's Sports Coach of the Year awards, Coach Sanchez has proven his dedication to the sport, to the college and to excellence.
This has been an exceptionally exciting year for soccer fans with major tournaments like the Olympics, Copa America and the UEFA European Championship. Coach Sanchez encouraged his players to watch these high-level matches to draw inspiration and enhance their understanding of the game.
The Men's Soccer team will participate in a scrimmage against CSU San Bernardino on Tuesday, August 20. Their official season opener is set for Friday, August 23, at 7:30 PM against Arizona Western as part of the Mt. SAC/Nike/Azteca Soccer Tournament.
