Mountie Men's Soccer claims Mt. SAC/Nike/Azteca Soccer Tournament title with upset win over Richland (Tex.)

(Walnut, CA) Behind an upset win over national powerhouse Richland (Tex.) College on Friday, Sept. 1, and a draw with West Valley College on Sunday, Sept. 3, Mt. San Antonio College claimed first place in the 2023 Mt. SAC/Nike/Azteca Soccer Tournament. Coming into the tournament, Richland was the nation's top-ranked team on the United Soccer Coaches Association poll and the Mounties were ranked No. 3.

Here are the tournament's final standings: Mt. SAC 16 points (goal differential: +2), Richland 10 points (GD: 0), Fullerton 10 points (GD: 0), West Valley 5 points (GD: -1)

Frank Gonzalez scored the game's first goal in the 10th minute on an assist from Diego Marchan to put the Mounties up 1-0. The Thunderducks responded with a score in the 41st minute to send the game tied into halftime.

Goals by Erick Nuno (Jacob Cervantes assist) in the 88th minute and Ernesto Figueroa (unassisted) in the 90th minute lifted Mt. SAC to victory

Daniel Ramirez played all 90 minutes in goal for the Mounties, making five saves.

Mt. SAC 0 West Valley 0

In a defensive battle, Ramirez did his part in holding West Valley (0-1-1) scoreless with three saves. Mt. SAC (1-1-2) had six shots on goal but were unable to find the back of the net.

The Mounties will host Saddleback College (0-1) for a non-conference game on Thursday, Sept. 7, at 5 p.m.
