(Walnut, CA) As the top seed in the California Community College Athletic Association Southern California Regionals, host Mt. SAC (15-2-2) scored a 3-1 opening-round win over No. 16 Cypress College (9-7-5) on Saturday.
Edward Castro got the scoring started for the Mounties with a goal on an assist from Matt Palos in the 12th minute, then again on an unassisted score in the 30th minute. Anthony Vargas tacked on another goal in the 66th minute to put the hosts up, 3-0. The Dons' only score came in the 71st minute.
Goalie Ryan Molina-Castillo made five saves in 90 minutes in the winning effort.
"The men's game against Cypress was not an easy match, Mt. SAC Men's Head Coach Juan Sanchez said. We found a way to get 2 goals in the first half but Cypress never gave up.
"Ryan Molina, our goalkeeper made a huge penalty kick save to keep the game from going 2-3."
"I am very proud of both teams and the effort (Hard Work) they put in today!"
In the second round, Mt. SAC will host No. 8 Santa Ana (10-5-6)—which defeated No. 9 Irvine Valley, 3-1, in the first round—on Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 4 p.m.
