(Walnut, CA) Mt. SAC's quest for a sixth CCCAA State Men's Soccer Championship began with a, 3-0, shutout of visiting College of the Canyons in the opening round of the Southern California playoffs.

Mt. SAC (17-3-3) will now host #10 seed College of the Desert (13-3-5), a 3-2 winner over #7 seed Rio Hondo, on Tuesday in the SoCal semifinals. Game time is 6:00 pm.

"Step one of the playoffs is always the most nerve-wrecking game," Head Coach Juan Sanchez replied. "We kept it 1-0 throughout the game and in the end we broke it open."

"You could see the confidence in our guys by the way we were keeping the ball and the way we were defending.  Overall they did a good job of keeping it together."

Leading the way for the Mounties was Alfonso Lopez who had two goals and an assist, with forward Giovanny Garcia adding the third goal.

"This was a very tough game," Alfonso said. "You have to have the right mindset when you come in and be positive."

The Mounties grabbed an early, 1-0, lead on a Lopez goal that was assisted by a cross from forward Gustavo Lopez and knocked it in the right corner of the net.

The Mountie defense controlled most of the game.  Led by defenders Tristan Sprague and Jacob Sowder, the Mounties kept Canyons from getting any shots on goal.

"It's a team effort and our motto is high press and don't let them get into the final third," Sowder said.

"I was just back there trying to organize and keeping everyone in shape while making sure everyone were on their toes."

"The game was all about us keeping possession of the ball, getting them tired to eventually break them down and get behind them for the goals."

Mt. SAC, which has won five CCCAA titles, broke through with two goals in the last thirteen minutes of the game.

In the 77th minute, Alfonso (unassisted) scored his second goal of the game for a 2-0 lead.  Garcia (Alfonso Lopez) put the game away with the third goal in the 80th minute.

Goal keeper John Samano recorded the shutout for the Mounties.
