(Walnut, CA) The "Gio" and "Fonzie" show took center stage Tuesday night (11/06) before a large sophomore night home crowd, as the Mounties shutout Chaffey, 6-0, to capture the South Coast Conference North title.

Sophomores Giovanny Garcia and Alfonso Lopez scored two goals and one assist each to lead the Mounties to their 13th conference championship since 1999.

"That's one of our goals every year is to win that conference championship," Mt. SAC coach Juan Sanchez said. "The boys did a fantastic job throughout the conference.

"Even though we got a tie on Friday (3-3) at Pasadena, they really came out and proved that they wanted to win the game."

The Mounties scored twice in the first half and scored three quick goals early in the second half to put the game away.

"We came out with a different attitude in the second half," said Lopez, who now has 15 goals this season.

"Winning the conference is a good feeling, especially with a lot of our fans here."

Lopez started the goal-scoring frenzy in the 25th minute after a perfect cross from Garcia from one side of the net to the other. The pass was right to his foot while he was in the air.

"I held my run and I just stuck my leg out and finished it," Lopez said.

Midfielder Kraig Bonanken gave Mt. SAC a, 2-0, lead just before the end of the first half, in the 43rd minute.

Garcia, who is fifth in the state in scoring with 17 goals, extended the Mt. SAC lead to 3-0 in the 49th minute.

"Fonzie found me and passed a through ball in and I faked out the defender with my left and the goalie came out and I went to the right and scored," Garcia said. "We always find each other."

Lopez followed two minutes later with an unassisted goal in the 51st minute for the 4-0 lead.

Garcia (Lopez) and midfielder Herminio Padilla (Tristan Sprague assist) finished off the scoring with goals in the 55th and 72nd minutes for the 6-0 final score.

Mt. SAC goal keepers Alain Hernandez and John Samano each played a half and had three saves apiece.

The Mounties complete the regular season on Friday, November 9th, with a game at East Los Angeles.

Mt. SAC, ranked seventh in the state, will await the playoff pairings which will be announced on Tuesday, November 13th.  Round one of the SoCal Regional Playoffs will be held on Saturday, November 17th.
