Mt. SAC Men’s Soccer Advances to CCCAA So CAL Finals

Mounties celebrate win on penalty kicks

By John M. Sherrard

(Walnut, CA) For the 11th consecutive year the Mt. SAC Men's Soccer Team has advanced to the California Community College Athletic Association Southern California finals with a double overtime win on penalty kicks over Irvine Valley College.

The No. 2 Seed Mounties, who were tied with IVC (11-6-4) 1-1 at the end of double OT, advanced to the finals with a 4-2 penalty kick victory Tuesday afternoon and are aiming for an 11th consecutive trip to the CCCAA State Championships.

The Mounties (17-4-3), who have won five state titles, will host No. 3 Seed Santa Barbara City College (17-0-4) on Saturday November 25 with a state final-four playoff berth on the line.

The Lasers took the early 1-0 lead in just the 4th minute over the Mounties.

Twenty-one minutes later Mt. SAC forward Sam Ponting, who leads the Mounties in goals with 13, took a pass from forward Jose Santoyo and tied the game at 1-1 in the 25th minute.

After a scoreless second half and two overtime periods, penalty kicks would be the deciding factor in the game.

The Mounties had been there before as they won the 2016 state championship on PKs.

In the best of five penalty shots, the Mounties and the Lasers each scored in round one and both teams would miss in the second round.

However, Mt. SAC scored on the next three shots and Irvine Valley would only manage to score one, to give the Mounties the 4-2 PK win.
