(Walnut, CA) With two victories in two games in the annual Mt. SAC Adidas/Azteca Soccer Tournament, the Mounties would expect to take home the title. However, the tiebreaker rule would hand the four-team tournament championship to Rio Hondo College, which also won two games, and the Mounties would finish as runner-up.

The Mounties defeated West Hills, 4-1, on Friday and Fullerton, 2-0, on Sunday. The shutout is the third in four games. The Roadrunners, who also defeated Fullerton and West Hills, outpointed Mt. SAC, 6-5, in a point system based on goals scored.

The Mounties continued their early-season winning streak with four consecutive wins to start the season, while allowing just one goal.

On Friday, the Mounties downed West Hills, 4-1, with four different players scoring a goal. Leading the way for Mt. SAC were forwards Andre Gamboa and Jose Santoyo with a goal and assist each.

Scoring their first goals of the season were freshmen midfielders Randy De Los Santos and Pedro Morales.

Gamboa, who tallied his sixth point of the season, gave the Mounties a quick, 1-0, lead in the 2nd minute with an unassisted goal.

The offense came alive in the second half with goals by Morales, De Los Santos (71st minute) and Santoyo (81st minute).

In Sunday night's game, freshman goal keeper Diego Orellana made his first college start and recorded his first shutout, a 2-0, win over Fullerton College. He turned away all four shots he faced.

Freshman forward/midfielder Marty Raygoza scored his second goal of the year in the 42nd minute of the first half for the 1-0 lead. Sophomore forward/midfielder Sam Ponting assisted on the goal.

Just three minutes into the second half (48th minute) freshman midfielder Spencer Hines gave the Mounties a 2-0 lead with an assist going to Alexis Diaz-Paya.

As a team the Mounties took nine shots on goal.

Mt. SAC will travel to play West Valley in a non-conference game this Saturday, September 9 at noon.
