Winning Streak Continues! Mountie Men’s Basketball Defeats Santiago Canyon, 88-73

(Walnut, CA) The Mount San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) Men's Basketball team extended their winning streak to six games to start the season, securing an 88-73 victory against host Santiago Canyon on Wednesday, November 22.

Sophomore guard Nick Hopkins delivered his second-highest scoring performance of the young season, contributing a game-high 27 points and grabbing a season-high 19 rebounds for the Mounties (11-20 field goals made-attempted, 5-8 free throws made-attempted, 1 assist, 4 steals).

Mikah Gardner, another sophomore guard, set a season-high in scoring with 24 points (7-11 field goals made-attempted, 4-5 free throws made-attempted, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal), showcasing his prowess with six three-pointers.

Freshman guard Jerimiyah Smith also entered double figures, tallying 13 points (5-6 field goals made-attempted, 2-3 free throws made-attempted, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal), while sophomore guard CJ Fisher added nine points (5-6 free throws made-attempted, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals).

Hopkins and Smith led the Mounties, averaging over 83 points per game, with 12 and 11 points, respectively, in the first half, contributing to Mt. SAC's 44-37 lead at halftime.

Gardner displayed an impressive performance in the second half, scoring 16 points, accompanied by 15 points from Hopkins. The Hawks attempted to narrow the gap with an 11-4 run early in the second half, closing the lead to just one point, 48-47, at the 16:12 mark. However, the Mounties responded promptly with a run of their own.

Within a four-minute window, Mt. SAC established an 11-point lead, 62-51, and maintained a double-figure advantage for the remainder of the game, securing the win.

Gardner led the charge for the Mounties with three consecutive three-pointers in under two minutes.

Mt. SAC continues its nonconference action on Wednesday, November 29, with a game at Southwestern College.
