Mountie Men's Basketball fall to ELAC, 89-80; Huskies win SCC North

(Walnut, CA) The Mt. SAC Men's Basketball team had its four-game winning streak snapped by visiting East Los Angeles College Friday (Feb. 18) with an 89-80 setback in a South Coast Conference North game.

With the ELAC victory, the Huskies became SCC North Champions with an 8-0 record.

Mt. SAC, which still has one conference game to go this week, falls to 5-2 in the conference and is 17-6 overall.

Leading the way for the Mounties with a game-high 24 points was freshman guard Shaquil Bender (8-16 FGM-A, 8-9 FTM-A, 7 RB, 2 Stls.).

Dyren Brown (5-7 FGM-A, 4-6 3PM-A, 5 RB, 1 A, 1 Stl., 1 Blk.) and Lowrance McClain (6-9 FGM-A, 1-1 3PM-A, 2-4 FTM-A, 1 A, 1 Stl.) scored 15 points each, while Jamal Edmonson (4-7 FGM-A, 3 RB, 1A, 1 Stl.) added eight points.

Mt. SAC had an early, 26-20, lead with 8:02 left in the first half, but eventually trailed by six, 48-42, at the break.

Brown led all scorers with 11 points in the opening half.

In the second half, ELAC built up a 14-point lead, 70-56, with 8:42 left.

But the Mounties came roaring back and trailed by eight, 80-72, behind two consecutive baskets by Bender - a big dunk, followed by a short jumper with 4:01 remaining. Bender had a big second half, scoring 16 of his 24 points.

That was followed a few minutes later with a 3-pointer by Noah Laurie (7 Pts.) to bring the Mounties within six, 82-76, with 2:47 left in the game.

The Huskies outscored the Mounties, 7-4, the remainder of the game for the win.

The Mounties will host Cerritos on Wednesday (Feb. 23) for their last regular season conference crossover game, then on Friday, they will host Rio Hondo in an SCC North game. Both games will tip off at 5:00 pm.
