Mounties close out SCC crossover schedule with overtime win at Compton

(Compton, CA) Trailing by as many as 17 in the second half, Mt. SAC (8-9) captured the lead late and outlasted host Compton in overtime to capture an 80-76 South Coast Conference crossover win on Friday night.

The Mounties led by three, 73-70, with 54 seconds to play in regulation but the Tartars (9-9) sent the game into overtime on a three-point play by Dominique Alexander at the 0:21 mark.

Behind 76-75 late in the extra period, Mt. SAC's Cyree Dunnell connected from behind the arc with 59 seconds to play to give the Mounties the lead for good, 78-76. Dunnell's game-winner followed a blocked shot by Israel Mansker and defensive rebound by Akinola Branco 25 seconds earlier. Daniel DeJoya made two free throws down the stretch to secure the 80-76 victory.

Dunnell led the Mounties off the bench with 18 points. Branco and DeJoya added 15 each, while Joseph Gonzalez and Shallamar Poole talled 11 apiece. Mansker finished with 10 points and nine rebounds. Poole also collected nine boards.

Compton's Derrius Ennis led all scorers with 20 points.

Tonight's game included seven lead changes and five ties.

Winners of three of their last four, the Mounties will travel to Los Angeles Trade Tech (14-3) to open SCC North Division play on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 5 p.m.
