Norwalk, Calif. – The Mt. SAC Football Team opened its 2025 campaign with a commanding 45-20 road win over Cerritos College on Saturday, August 30, at Falcon Stadium, riding a second-quarter scoring surge to seize control and never look back.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After a back-and-forth opening quarter that saw Cerritos take a 14-7 lead, the Mounties erupted for 28 points in the second quarter, flipping the script and heading into halftime up 35-20. From there, Mt. SAC's defense took over – shutting out the Falcons the rest of the game.
Quarterback Hunter Herrera set the tone with a strong performance through the air, completing 16 of 24 passes for 298 yards and three touchdowns, including a 63-yard bomb to Damari Wiggins and a 53-yard throw to Devon Anderson. Backup Daunte Bell was a perfect 3-for-3 for 32 yards in limited action.
Anderson led all receivers with four catches for 112 yards and a touchdown, while Wiggins added 72 yards and a score on two receptions. RJ Willis also hauled in an 8-yard touchdown adding to the second-quarter outburst.
Mt. SAC's running back corps found the end zone multiple times as well. Aiden Ramos scored twice on short runs in the second quarter, and Damien Smith added a 9-yard touchdown late in the third. Smith led the team in rushing with 45 yards on 10 carries, helping the Mounties rack up 119 rushing yards on the night.
After giving up 20 points in the first half, the Mountie defense slammed the door in the final two quarters. Jayden Murrietta recorded the team's only sack, while Nasjae Richardson and Marquis Berteau contributed key tackles for loss. The defense also forced two fumbles, recovering both, and held Cerritos scoreless in the second half despite the Falcons tallying 441 total yards of offense.
Kicker Kenneth Junger Porta hit a 22-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to cap Mt. SAC's scoring and Nicholas Lane averaged 48.7 yards on punts.
With this win, Mt. SAC's record sits at 1-0 as they look to keep the momentum rolling into next week.
