Baseball Snaps Losing Streak; Avila Pitches Mounties to 6-1 Victory

(Compton, CA) The Mt. SAC Baseball team snapped a five-game losing streak with a 6-1 win over host El Camino-Compton Center in a South Coast Conference crossover game Thursday afternoon.

Sophomore pitcher Josh Avila evened his record at 4-4 with a seven-inning performance, scattering six hits and a run and struck out six.

Avila added to his team-leading strikeout total of 42 on the season.

Freshman reliever Mason Corneliussen pitched a perfect two innings for the Mounties to close out the win.

Leading the way for the Mounties was freshman first baseman Jacob Castillo (2 for 4, run) with two doubles and freshman right fielder Brandon Bradshaw (1-3, run, RBI, triple).

The Mounties (9-16, 2-8) never trailed in the game as they took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Freshman third baseman Conner Shepherd (1-4, 2 runs) scored on a fielders choice by freshman left fielder Nic Sandoval (1-4, SB) and freshman second baseman Alex Gonzalez (2 runs, SB) came home on an El Camino-CC throwing error.

After Compton cut the Mt. SAC lead in half, 2-1, in the third inning the Mounties took a 3-1 lead on a run-scoring single by Sandoval, scoring Gonzalez.

The Mounties closed out the scoring with three runs in the eighth inning. Bradshaw tripled in Castillo, followed by a run-scoring double by Shepherd, scoring Bradshaw for the 5-1 lead and pinch hitter Tyrus Lineberger knocked in Shepherd.

Mt. SAC will host Rio Hondo College on Tuesday at Mazmanian Field at 2:30 pm for the first of a three-game series.
