Walnut, Calif. – Playing through temperatures in the upper 80s, the Mt. SAC Women's Beach Volleyball Team split a competitive day on the home sand courts. The Mounties opened with a strong 4-1 victory over El Camino to secure their first South Coast Conference win of the season before dropping a tough 4-1 decision to Santa Barbara. Mt. SAC now stands at 9-5 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
In the conference opener against El Camino, Mt. SAC controlled the momentum early. In the No. 1 position, Emma Carson and Eva Fisher delivered a dominant straight-set victory over Taylor Puleri and Yasmin Watanabe, 21-13, 21-10. Sydney Valentine and Morgan Wilson followed with a strong performance at No. 2, defeating Bella Ober and Laila Alarbesh 21-13, 21-19.
Kayla Staveley and Yaretzi Silva added another point in the No. 3 spot with a 21-15, 21-19 win over Justine Sapitavan and Ava Ober. The most competitive match of the contest came at No. 5, where Veronica Estrada and Bella Ross battled to a three-set victory over Arden Templeton and Yasmine Itani, 21-17, 19-21, 15-12. Jeanie Rhodes and Jasmyn Stampley competed in the No. 4 spot but fell in straight sets, 11-21, 14-21.
The second match of the day against Santa Barbara proved more challenging, but the Mounties had a standout moment at the top spot. Carson and Fisher secured an impressive comeback win in the No. 1 pairing against Abby Stenz and Maddie Papia. After dropping the opening set 16-21, the duo regrouped and elevated their play, taking the next two sets 21-16 and 15-13 for Mt. SAC's lone point of the match.
NEXT UP:
The Mounties travel to Palm Desert on Friday, March 6, for matchups against College of the Desert and Long Beach, with competition beginning at 10:00 a.m. Mt. SAC will look to build on its conference momentum as the season continues.
