(San Diego, CA) The Mt. SAC Beach Volleyball team won its seventh consecutive match as they defeated San Diego Mesa, 4-1, and Grossmont, 3-2 in non-conference action on Friday, March 10.
With the two wins, the Mounties improved to a program-best 9-1, which is the best start since the sport was started in 2018.
"I am so thrilled," Mt. SAC Beach Volleyball coach Danielle Diaz said. They were huge wins. Both teams (Mesa and Grossmont) have been past state contenders and being able to get a win on both teams despite the factors, is a good indication of what this team will be capable of doing this season."
"We left campus in the early morning, traveled far, had a four-hour break in between matches, and played in pouring rain. The girls didn't let any of that negatively affect them. We are 9-1 now and are excited for conference play to get started next week. I have been making a few changes in partnership and pair rankings within the last few weeks and I am confident that those changes are best for the team as a whole and will help continue leading us to success.
Leading the way for the Mounties is the team of Riley DeGroot/Paige Gutowski.
They played as 1's against Mesa and won in straight sets, 21-17, 21-16, and 2's against Grossmont and swept their match in straight sets, 21-11, 21-15.
With their two wins, they are a perfect 10-0 this season.
The two have only dropped one set all season, as it came against Orange Coast College.
The pairs team of Allison Whiteman/Bristol Christelman swept their opponents against Mesa, 21-17, 21-12 in the No. 2 position and lost in straight sets, 21-23, 15-21 as 1's against Grossmont. They are 6-4 on the season.
Both the 3's (Angelina Burton/Riannel Arevalo) and 4's (Liz Ortiz/Capri Salmon) won both sets against Mesa and Grossmont.
Next up for Mt. SAC is a pair of matches Wednesday (March 15) at Ocean Park in Santa Monica against San Diego Miramar and host Santa Monica.
