Mt. San Antonio College Alters Historic Cross Country Invitational Course to Adapt to Modern Trends

Walnut, CA – Mt. San Antonio College announced alterations to its renowned Cross Country Invitational course on Saturday, marking a pivotal moment in the event's storied history. For nearly five decades, athletes have tackled the same challenging route: navigating the Valley Loop, traversing switchbacks, and conquering the infamous Poop Out Hill before circling Reservoir Hill and crossing the finish line to complete a rigorous three-mile race.

Beginning this October, the traditional route will see a notable change as Poop Out Hill is eliminated from the course and runners are redirected inside Hilmer Lodge Stadium to finish the race. This change evokes nostalgia for participants and spectators, while highlighting a strategic shift that aligns with current cross country dynamics.

The decision to alter the course was made to coincide with modern training practices and ensures the course meets these changes. Most routes today emphasize speed over traditional courses with challenging hills. Coaches and athletes have adapted to the evolving landscape and are training to optimize performance on these terrains. Relocating the finish line inside Hilmer Lodge Stadium allows Mt. SAC to take this step into the future while also greatly enhancing the spectator experience.

Hilmer Lodge Stadium offers modern amenities allowing for real-time race results and live coverage on an 85-foot-wide by 37-foot-tall Daktronics screen. The venue provides covered seating and permanent restroom facilities which provide comfort and accessibility, further enriching the viewing experience for all attendees. With a seating capacity of 11,500, it provides ample space for spectators to cheer on their loved ones as they run by our stadium slogan, "Where the World's Best Athletes Compete."

As Mt. SAC prepares for a new era of competition at the 76th Cross Country Invitational, the college remains committed to this event, while honoring the event's rich history. We will once again welcome thousands of dedicated runners who will compete on the storied course, propelling the sport forward into a new chapter of excellence.
