(Walnut, CA) The 56th annual Mt. SAC Relays showcased many of the top track and field athletes in the world, with a good portion of that talent coming from current and former California Community College (CCC) student/athletes.
The two “fastest” men at the Mt. SAC Relays were current and former CCC student-athletes. Deondre Batson (University of Alabama, far right in picture) had the fastest time of the day, clocking 10.06 in the 100 meters. Batson, a former 100 and 200 meter state champion out of American River College (Sacramento, CA), ran the 4th fastest time in the world this year in the Invitational Men’s 100 meter heat. In the Olympic Development Heat (which followed Batson’s race), current CCC standout, Kemarley Brown of Merritt College (Oakland, CA), ran a blistering 10.13 to clock the second fastest 100 meter time of day and the 7th fastest time in the world this year.
The College of the Sequoias Men's 4X400 Meter Relay Team captured the Olympic Development Section, running a blistering 3:07.14 which was the 4th fastest time of the day. The time for the team of Miguel Barton, Michael Taylor, Marlon Dixon and Akeem Alexander is the fastest time in the state and the 24th fastest time in the world this season.
Former state champions, Ameer Webb (Nike) and Raymond Stewart (unattached) both placed 5th in their respective events. Webb, out of Cerritos College, ran 20.76 in the invitational 200 meters while Stewart, out of Merritt College, ran 13.49 in the invitational 110 meter hurdles. In the 400 meter hurdles, former state champion, Kenneth Medwood (Evo Track Club) out of East Los Angeles College, took 7th in the invitational section, while former state champion out of Mt .SAC, Jordin Andrade (unattached), took second in the Olympic Development section, but was later disqualified for a technical infraction.
The Mt. SAC Relays is the world’s largest track and field invitational with over 13,000 competitors, from youth to world class athletes. For the past 56 years in April, athletes, coaches and fans from throughout the world converge on Historic Hilmer Lodge Stadium (campus of Mt. San Antonio College), “where the world’s best athletes compete.” The stadium has been the site of many historic events including Olympic Trials, USA National Championships, 20 world records and the greatest day in track and field, where 6 world records were set or tied in 1960.
