Mt. SAC Women’s Cross Country Takes 2nd in SCC Championships; Ruiz Finishes 2nd

(Norwalk, CA) The Mt. SAC Women's Cross Country Team finished second in the South Coast Conference Championships Friday October 26 at Cerritos Regional Park in Norwalk.

Placing second in the 5K race was Mt. SAC's Rebecca Ruiz, who was named to the All-SCC, first-team for the second year, with a time of 17:49.8. Ruiz, who averaged a 5:44.3 mile, was one of only three runners under the 18-minute mark.

L.A. Harbor, who finished in a tie last year with Mt. SAC, won its first outright title by narrowly defeating the Mounties. L.A. Harbor had 28 points, followed by the Mounties with 36 and Chaffey a distant third with 86.

There were 56 entrants in the race and 11 ran for Mt. SAC.

The Mounties, who are ranked third in state by the 5CTCA, placed three more scoring runners in the top ten, which included: Sadie Encinas, 5th (18:28.7); All-SCC (Second year) Montserrath Celis, 7th (18:43.9) and All-SCC Second Team Alyssa Armendaris, 8th (18:45.7). As a team, the Mounties had an average finishing time of 18:39.

Encinas, who was also named to the All-SCC first team, was the highest freshmen finisher out of the 31 first-year runners.

The fifth Mountie runner, who finished 14th and scored points, was All-SCC Second Team Andrea Diaz (19:30.9).

The sixth and seventh place finishers for Mt. SAC were Evelyn Peralta, 15th (19:32) and Yesenia Flores, 20th (19:59.8), respectively.

The Mountie runners will try to repeat as champions this Friday November 2 in the CCCAA Southern California Regional Championship at the Cerritos Regional Park in Norwalk.
