Mountie Women's Cross Country Team Captures First SCC Championship of the 2016-17 Season!

(El Monte, CAThe first South Coast Conference (SCC) Championship of the 2016 season was captured by the Mt. SAC Women's Cross Country Team.  The Mounties led by Teresa Castillo (4th place, 18:52), scored 37 points to win the title.  Second place team honors went to L.A. Harbor College (64 points).  Third place team honors went to Chaffey College (89 points).   As far as coaching, it was a team podium sweep for the Mounties, as both L.A. Harbor College Women's Head Coach, Geoff Skarr and Chaffey College Women's Head Coach, Rob Lander are Mt. SAC Track and Field/Cross Country Alumni.

The Mounties ran the 3 mile (Whittier Narrows Recreational Area) Legg Lake Course in a tight pack (29 second gap between runner #1 and runner #5), finishing with an impressive team time of 1:35:16.  Rounding out the top 5 (scoring runners) for the Mounties were Crystal Jardines (5th place, 18:54), Danielle Murrieta (7th Place, 18:56), Sophia Tsabadze (9th place, 19:13) and Yareny Ramos (12th place, 19:21).

On the men's side, the Mountie men produced a resounding victory over the rest of field, with a 17 point performance, to capture their fourth consecutive South Coast Conference Championship.  The team's performance was one of the most dominating team performances in SCC Cross Country Championship History.

Mt. SAC was led by SCC Individual Champion Trelani Waters, who ran the 4 mile (Whittier Narrows Recreational Area) Legg Lake Course in 20:00.  Within the next 16 seconds, Kevin Herrera (2nd place, 20:05), Manuel Fernandez (3rd place, 20:09), Michael Dondalski (5th place, 20:14) and Nicholas Medina (6th place, 20:16) also crossed the line. 

Mt. SAC Men's SCC Championship Performance Highlights

  1. Scored a mere 17 points, just two points shy of a perfect score of 15.
  2. Ran an incredible team time of 1:40.44
  3. Produced a  team gap of only 16 seconds (runner #1 through #5)
  4. The Mt. SAC "B" Team (runners 8-14) would have placed second if they were their own team
  5. The Mt. SAC "C" Team (runners 15-21) would have placed fifth if they were their own team
  6. Captured 8 of the top 10 places
  7. Captured 14 of the top 20 places
  8. Captured 18 of the top 30 places
  9. Captured 11 of the 14 all conference first or second team honors

The Mounties will compete next at California Community College Athletic Association Southern California Championships which will be held, next Friday, November 4th at Irvine Regional Park in Orange, California.
