Norwalk, Calif. – In a crucial South Coast Conference (SCC) matchup and the final game of the regular season, the Mt. San Antonio College Women's Water Polo Team walked away with a big 11-7 victory over Cerritos on Wednesday, October 29.
With this win, the Mounties improve to 12–11 overall and 6–1 in SCC play, sitting second in the conference standings behind Long Beach (30–1 overall, 7–0 SCC). Cerritos rounds out the top three at 12–12 overall and 5–2 in conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Cerritos opened hot, scoring twice in the first two minutes. Mt. SAC responded with four unanswered goals — two from Nathaly Mora, and one each from Ava Mercado and Angelina Hernandez — to take a 4–2 lead. The Falcons struck again with 13 seconds left in the first quarter, cutting the deficit to 4–3.
Cerritos tied the game early in the second period, but Mt. SAC quickly regained control with goals from Mora and Jessica Luna, taking a 6–4 lead into halftime.
The third quarter was all Mt. SAC with two more goals from Mora and another from Mercado as the Mounties surged ahead 9-4.
The last quarter was the only period in which the Falcons outscored the Mounties, but it wasn't enough to put them back in the lead. Hernandez and Mora added two final goals, while the Falcons' Layla Gonzalez, Monserrat Rodriguez, and Isabella Ochoa each scored to close the gap.
NEXT UP:
The Mounties now turn their attention to the South Coast Conference Championships, set for November 6–8 at Cerritos College. Stay tuned for game times and matchups – good luck, ladies!
