(Glendora, CA) The Mt. SAC Women's Volleyball team opened the 2022 season with a 3-0 sweep of host Citrus College Friday (August 26).
In a season where the expectations are high for a veteran team, the Mounties won 25-22, 25-13, 25-21.
"In our season opener, we had some first-match jitters, which is expected," Mt. SAC Volleyball coach Samantha Neely said. "The team quickly shook that off after the first set and took control of the match.
"We had a lot of players come off the bench and make a difference in the match to earn the win."
Leading the way was sophomore outside hitter Riley DeGroot with a match-high 11 kills (.476) and 16 digs.
Sophomore opposite Allison Whiteman added eight kills, followed by six kills from sophomore transfer Angelina Burton with six kills and outside hitter JJ Quarrels added five.
Leading the way with a team-high 17 assists was freshman setter Capri Salmon and sophomore setter Kylie Rhodes had 12. Freshman middle blocker Keilani Lim added a solo block and two block assists.
The first set was close the whole way, with neither team taking charge.
Trailing, 22-20, the Mounties won the last five points to take the first set.
In the second set with the score tied, 1-1, Mt. SAC took control of the set and the match with 10 consecutive points to win going away, 25-13, for a 2-0 lead.
In the third set, Mt. SAC trailed, 11-10, but consecutive kills by Lim and Burton gave the Mounties a 12-11 advantage and they never trailed the remainder of the way.
The Mounties will now travel to Bakersfield to play against host Bakersfield and Santa Barbara College.
