Mt. SAC Women’s Tennis qualifies three singles players and two doubles teams to CCCAA State Championships in SCC Tournament

(Walnut, CA) After the South Coast Conference Tournament on April 6-7, the Mt. SAC Women's Tennis team has qualified three singles players and two doubles teams for the CCCAA State Tennis Individual Championships. The championships will take place from April 27-30 and will be hosted by Ventura College. The three singles players who will represent Mt. SAC are Lydia Jong and Lara Rizkallah, both sophomores and freshman Jayday Drewery. The two doubles teams are Drewery/Rizkallah and Jong/Anh Nguyen.

"The team had a strong showing at the conference tournament," said Mt. SAC Women's Tennis coach Lee Shiomoto. "It was a great week for Mountie Tennis." Meanwhile, the Mountie Men also qualified for the state championships with two singles players and three doubles teams.

During the SCC Tournament, Drewery advanced the furthest among the 30 singles players, falling in the SCC semifinals, 1-6, 4-6. Drewery won her first three matches in the tournament, including a three-set victory over Sophia Lopez of Mt. San Jacinto College. Jong and Rizkallah won their opening sets but fell in the second round. However, they were given the opportunity to play back through the draw and qualify for the state tournament.

In doubles, Drewery/Rizkallah reached the finals of the conference tournament, losing to COD, 8-0. They won their first two matches by the score of 8-0 and won their semifinal match against COD, 8-2. The other doubles team, Jong/Nguyen, won their first set, 8-6, over Rio Hondo but fell in the second round to COD, 8-0. However, they also had the chance to qualify for the state championships in a playback match and defeated the team from MSJC.
