Wrestling Defeats Rio Hondo in Conference Opener, 49-9

(WALNUT) The Mt. SAC Wrestling team held its first conference match of the season and easily defeated visiting Rio Hondo College, 49-9, Wednesday night at the Mounties gym.

The Mounties, competing in the Southern California Wrestling Association (Southwest) Conference have three remaining matches against Santa Ana College, Cerritos College and Palomar College. The Palomar match is this Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Palomar in San Marcos.

In the Rio Hondo match the Mounties had three falls and three technical decisions out of the ten weight classes.

The three falls were accomplished by freshman Joseph Dominguez (149 lbs., :45), sophomore Reed South (174 lbs., 2:01) and freshman Barnabas Yi (184 lbs.).

Three freshman, John Whisner (125 lbs., 18-1), Julian Melecio (133 lbs., 16-1) and Vincent Herrera (157 lbs., 19-0) all won on technical decisions.

Mounties freshman heavyweight wrestler Joshua Sapian (285 lbs.) won a close decision, 4-2 over his opponent, while Mt. SAC freshman Apollo Santos lost a, 7-5, decision in the 165 lb. weight class.

Mt. SAC sophomore Kevin Kelly (141 lbs.) and Rio Hondo wrestler Andrew Ramos (197 lbs.) each won on a bye.
