Walnut, Calif. – In an exciting back-and-forth game, the Mt. SAC Softball Team came out on top with a narrow 6-5 win over Bakersfield College on Wednesday, April 23. With this win, the Mounties improved to 25-13 overall and 18-6 in the South Coast Conference, while Bakersfield dropped to 21-19 overall and 9-3 in the Western State South Conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The game got off to a rocky start for Mt. SAC, as starting pitcher Samantha Vizcarra allowed three early runs in the first inning—including a bases-loaded walk and a two-RBI single by Bakersfield's Jennifer Padilla. Kayden Connaty entered in relief and held down the fort for the remainder of the game.
The Mounties quickly responded in the bottom of the first. Morgan Kneubuhler stepped up and launched a three-run homer to tie it up, scoring Samantha Orozco and Katie Griego. Mt. SAC grabbed the lead in the second when Audrey White came home on an error, making it 4-3.
Bakersfield wasn't done yet. In the fourth, Sadie Salas drove in two with a double to left-center, putting the Knights ahead 5-4.
But the Mounties struck back in their half of the fourth. Amanda Porterfield singled in Kiana Kadena to tie the game, and White's sacrifice fly brought home Connaty for the go-ahead—and eventual game-winning—run.
