(Walnut, CA) The Mt. SAC Softball team (8-3) split a doubleheader with visiting Cypress, winning the opener, 7-0, and falling in the nightcap, 10-0, in non-conference games on Saturday, February 18.

The Mounties, who are No. 3 in the CCCAA State rankings, opened with a complete-game 7-0 shutout win over the Chargers, as freshman pitcher Aleyna Urbina went the distance in the circle for her sixth win of the season with no losses. She scattered eight hits and struck out two batters.

Highlighting the offense was a three-run home run by sophomore left fielder Desiree Bravo (1 for 3), while sophomore center fielder Mia Mendoza also homered and was a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Mendoza opened the scoring for the Mounties in the bottom of the first with a two-run home run. That was followed by single runs in the second and third innings by the Mounties.

In the fifth, Mendoza and sophomore first baseman Brianna Goris singled and Bravo completed the scoring with her first home run of the season for the 7-0 lead.

In the second game, Cypress returned the favor and throttled the Mounties offense, as pitcher Emily Rush allowed only two hits - a single by Mt. SAC sophomore right fielder Emily Barba and a double by sophomore second baseman Asia Chacon.

The Mounties continue with a busy week as they will play four games in three days at home, beginning with a non-conference game against Compton on Thursday (Feb. 23) and the South Coast Conference opener against Rio Hondo on Friday (Feb. 24). They will split a doubleheader on Saturday (Feb. 25) against Palomar and Santiago Canyon, with Palomar and Santiago Canyon playing the middle game. The games will get underway at noon.
