Mt. SAC Takes Sweepstakes Championship At The 2016 Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational

(Walnut, CA)  The first day of the 2016 Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational proved to be a fantastic one for the Mounties, who captured the overall Community College Division Sweepstakes Championship.  The Mounties scored a lowest combined (men's and women's) team time of 3:22:05 to easily outdistance themselves from second place combined team, College of the Sequoias, who had a combined team time of 3:26:45. 

The Mt. SAC men, scored an incredible 27 points (team time 1:45:59) to capture the men's community college division title.  Trelani Waters led the Mounties, with a second place finish, over the challenging 4 mile course, in a time of 20:56.  Along with Waters, the top eight Mounties, Manuel Fernandez (4th place, 20:59), Kevin Herrera (5th place, 21:10), Michael Dondalski (7th place, 21:26), Nicholas Medina (9th place, 21:28), Cesar Bermudez (10th place, 21:32), Jonathan Mijares (13th place, 21:34) and Carlos Barrios (15th place, 21:42) all earned medals by finishing in the top 15.

On the Women's side, the Mounties placed second with a score of 68 points (team time 1:36:06), 8 points behind Central California powerhouse, College of the Sequoias, who scored 56 points. All of the top seven Mountie Women finished the challenging and hilly three mile course in under 20 minutes, something few teams have ever accomplished.  Crystal Jardines led the women with a 7th place finish and a sub 19 time of 18:50.  Additional medal winners (top 15 finish) include Teresa Castillo (9th place, 19:00) and Danielle Murrieta (13th place, 19:11).

The Mounties will take next weekend off to host the high school division of the Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational, which will run next Friday and Saturday, October 21st and 22nd.  The next competition for the teams will be the South Coast Conference Championships, on Friday, October 28th at Whittier Narrows Park (Legg Lake), in El Monte, Californida.
