(Long Beach, CA) It came down to No. 1 Cerritos College and No. 2 Mt. San Antonio College battling it out for the men's South Coast Conference title at Long Beach City College on Saturday, Nov. 4. The Falcons (21-9, 5-1) never trailed in the game until George Roby-Unkovich broke a 13-13 tie on an unassisted goal with 1:41 left to play to give the Mounties (22-7, 5-1) a 14-13 lead, the eventual victory and the conference title, their first since 2003 and second ever.
In a closely contested game, the teams took turns scoring but it was always Cerritos taking the lead after the Mounties pulled even. With 7:18 left to play, the Falcons took a 13-11 lead and looked to be pulling away toward the conference title. However, Roby-Unkovich scored a goal at the 4:18 mark to pull Mt. SAC to within one, then Roman Robles added another score with 2:19 to play to knot the score at 13, setting the table for Roby-Unkovich's game-winner.
Brandon Fabrega led the Mounties with five goals on the day while teammate Edward (EJ) Lynch added three. Aidan Gilloly and Roby-Unkovich posted two goals each and Robles and Alex Lopez added one each to account for Mt. SAC's scoring.
The Mounties now await the announcement of the California Community College Athletic Association Southern Regional playoff pairings, which get underway on Thursday, Nov. 9, at Citrus College.
