(Whittier, CA) In a battle for first place in the South Coast Conference Men's Soccer, the Rio Hondo Roadrunners tied Mt. SAC with a late goal to remain on top of the conference on Friday, October 27, at Rio Hondo.
The tie was the eighth of the season for the Mounties, the second-most in the state this season. Mt. SAC recorded seven ties in the 2014 season and topped that mark with Friday's 1-1 draw with Rio Hondo.
With that tie, the Roadrunners (8-7-3 overall) remain in the top spot in the conference with a 5-2-1 record, while the Mounties (6-4-8) are close behind at 4-1-3. Mt. SAC has one remaining game before the postseason SCC tournament, with a game at East L.A. College on Tuesday (Oct. 31).
After a scoreless first half, Mt. SAC sophomore forward Abel Salazar scored an unassisted goal in the 64th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
In the 90th minute, Rio Hondo's Ariel Solano (assisted by Emilio Ramirez) tied the game, 1-1, with the equalizer.
Mounties' sophomore goalie Daniel Ramirez faced 11 shots from the Roadrunners in the game, making three saves on four shots on goal.
It was a rough game as the Mounties had 12 fouls, and Rio Hondo recorded 15.
