(Norwalk, CA) In a game that was delayed a day after a lightning strike on Tuesday, the Mt. SAC Men's Soccer team fell to the CCCAA No. 1 ranked Cerritos College Falcons, 2-1, in a South Coast Conference crossover game on Wednesday (Oct. 12) at Cerritos.

With the Falcons holding a 2-1 lead late in the first half, a lightning strike occurred, delaying the contest. After much discussion and a couple more lightning strikes, the game was suspended to the next day, but the Mounties (10-3-0, 2-1-0) couldn't score again against a tough Falcons defense.

The Mounties, who are ranked No. 3 in the state, opened the game with the first goal when a Cerritos player had a rough slide tackle just inside the 18-yard box, which resulted in a penalty kick.

Mt. SAC sophomore midfielder Alex Mendez, who took his time as he faced the goalie, put the ball to the right of the Cerritos keeper for the 1-0 lead in the 8th minute

Six minutes later in the 14th minute, the Falcons evened the score, 1-1, after Mt. SAC goalie Daniel Ramirez didn't get a complete foot on a clearing attempt and Cerritos sent a high kick over Ramirez, who was out of the goal, for the score to tie the game, 1-1.

The go-ahead score came later in the first half in the 30th minute for the 2-1 lead.

"You can't explain that high-energy game," Mt. SAC coach Juan Sanchez said. "That was the start when both teams came out on fire and tried to get on top of the score. We got one early but they got us on two very good scores."

Just prior to the end of the first half, the Mounties had a one-on-one chance that the keeper deflected.

Just eight minutes later, the lightning strike would halt the game.

As expected, the game was rough with seven total yellow cards handed out, four of which went to Mt. SAC and three to the Falcons.

After the game was resumed the next day, defense was the name of the game for the teams in the second half.

Mt. SAC missed two more good scoring chances near the end of the game.

The Mounties continue conference play on Friday (Oct. 14) at home against Long Beach City.
