Hochsprung, Stone Qualify for CCCAA So Cal Men’s Golf Regionals

By John M. Sherrard

(Chino Hills, CA) In the season-ending Orange Empire Conference tournament, two members of the Mt. SAC Men's Golf team have qualified for the CCCAA  Southern California Regionals which will take place at the El Camino Country Club in Oceanside next Monday, May 8.

Sophomore James Hochsprung and freshman Dylan Stone both qualified as individuals to compete in the So Cal's.

Both golfers were two of only three that qualified as individuals that weren't on the top three conference teams for the Regionals.

Hochsprung, who finished with a season average of 75, shot a morning even-par 72 and a three-over-par 77 in the afternoon for a 149 on the day, while Stone (79.4 season avg.) shot a 74 (148) for each round.  He received an automatic berth in the Regionals with the best two rounds combined, which was the top score of any of the individuals on teams that didn't move on to Regionals.

"James was our No. 1 all year and made first team All-Conference," said Mt. SAC Men's Golf coach Greg Osbourne, who is a PGA member.

Hochsprung was one of only five golfers in conference that shot a 69 during the season matches.

"Dylan played the best at the end and overcame a lot (during the season). I'm very proud of them both," Osbourne added.

Riverside City College won the 2017 OEC title, with Cypress a close second, followed by Orange Coast College in third.

The Mounties finished fifth in conference in the 10-match schedule and missed the Regionals as only the top three teams in conference advance.

In the final two-round championship tournament, Mt. SAC was third in the morning on the par 72 North course with a 3-2 record, but slipped to a fourth-place tie in the afternoon on the par 74 South course going 1-4.

The top four winning teams in both the Northern and Southern California Regionals advance to the CCCAA State Championships at the Cypress Wood Golf Course in Arroyo Grande, along with the top six individuals not with a Regional team.
