Walnut, Calif. – After a slow start to the season, the Mt. SAC Baseball Team is heating up at just the right time. The Mounties extended their win streak to nine games on Friday, April 10, powering past the Compton Coyotes 14-3 to complete their third straight series sweep. Over the three-game stretch, Mt. SAC left no doubt who was in control, outscoring Compton 42-8.
Now sitting at 20-15 overall, the Mounties are starting to look every bit like the defending state champions—and they've taken over first place in the South Coast Conference with a 17-4 record.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
In the bottom of the first, Andrew Alva crushed a two-run home run to get the crowd going, and Jackson Giacone followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Mounties a quick 3-0 lead.
The offense kept rolling in the third inning when Isaac Fanoga delivered a clutch double, driving in Giacone and Nick Mejia to stretch the lead to 5-0.
Then came the breakout inning.
The Mounties exploded for nine runs in the fourth, turning the game into a runaway. Ryan Castro sparked the rally with a single, while Chip Mertz and Alva added doubles. A few costly passed balls from the Coyotes helped pile on the damage as Mt. SAC built a strong 14-0 advantage.
Compton showed some fight late in the game, getting on the board with a single from Noah Gomez, a sacrifice fly from Julain Arellano and a solo homerun. But the early deficit proved too much to overcome as the Mounties stayed in control.
On the mound, Brenden Menchaca delivered a solid performance, earning his third win of the season with five strong innings and three strikeouts. The bullpen—Noah Tanphanich, Seth Sumner, and Juan Verduzco—kept things steady before Brett Maloof closed out the game to secure the victory.
