Mt. SAC Baseball Edged by Cerritos College, 7-6, in South Coast Conference Game

By John M. Sherrard

(Walnut, CA) The Mt. SAC Baseball team fell a run short, 7-6, to South Coast Conference rival Cerritos College Tuesday afternoon at Mazmanian Field.

The Mounties (7-11, 0-3) twice staged comebacks in the game, but fell a run short and dropped their fourth game in a row.

Leading the way for the Mounties was freshman center fielder Quinn Cotter (2 for 2), with a run-scoring triple, two RBIs and a stolen base, while freshman third baseman Conner Shepherd (1-3, 2 walks) scored a pair of runs.

Cerritos took a 3-0 lead in the second inning but the Mounties answered with a pair in the bottom of the inning.

After Shepherd scored to take a 1-0 lead, Cotter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing in sophomore catcher Andrew Garcia (1-3, RBI, SB) to trail, 3-2.

Two innings later, the Falcons put up another trio of runs for the 6-2 advantage.

Again, the Mounties mounted a comeback with another two runs.

After Cotter tripled in freshman second baseman Alex Gonzalez, freshman shortstop Ryon Knowles grounded out to the Cerritos first baseman scoring Cotter, to climb within two runs, 6-4.

In the fifth inning, Shepherd scored his second run when Garcia grounded out to short, putting the Mounties within a run, 6-5.

However, after each team exchanged a run over the next two innings, the Mounties still would fall a run short, 7-6.
