Mounties win second straight game in extra innings, 9-8
(Walnut) By John M. Sherrard – Trailing 8-7 in the bottom of the 11th inning, the Mounties, for the second consecutive game, came from behind and scored twice to defeat visiting Riverside City College, 9-8, for a non-conference victory Tuesday night at Mazmanian Field.

After defeating Irvine Valley last Saturday in the tenth inning, Mt. SAC evened its record at 4-4, with a dramatic two-run eleventh inning for the win.

Sophomore outfielder D.J. Daniels (Bishop Amat HS) connected with a sharp single to right field, scoring pinch runner Tyrus Lineberger (Chino Hills HS) with the winning run, sending the Mountie dugout racing out to mob Daniels.

"I've been hurt lately and it felt good to come in there and help my boys," Daniels said. "This is exactly what we needed to turn things around."

Daniels was referring to both extra inning wins for the Mounties.

The Mounties had their largest output of the season with 16 hits, as sophomore catcher Kory Brown (Charter Oak HS) and sophomore third baseman Esteban Ortega (Los Altos HS) had three each. Brown, for the second consecutive game collected three RBIs for the Mounties. Both Brown and Ortega had three hits, also for the second game in a row.

Freshman left fielder Jimmy Frazier (West Covina HS) and sophomore first baseman Matt Majher (Corona HS) each collected two hits.

"It's a great win as we beat a quality team tonight," Mt. SAC third-year coach Kevin Smith said. "The kids really battled tonight and I hope it's a graduation for our kids to really step it up."

Not to be outdone was the pitching of reliever Logan Muratalla (San Dimas HS), who came in to relieve freshman starter David Valdivia (Claremont HS).

Muratalla retired 12 of the 14 batters he faced in four innings of work. The freshman also struck out nine RCC batters, including six in a row.

"Logan came in and did a phenomenal job," Smith said. "He's been much more than anyone expected him to do. He had such a huge part in tonight's win, even though he didn't get the win."

Muratalla, a 6-2 right hander, also pitched two innings of relief on Saturday against Irvine Valley to pick up his first college win.

The Mounties led 2-0 in the first inning after an RBI triple by sophomore designated hitter Spencer Sundahl (East Lake HS, Chula Vista), scoring Brown and a single to right by Majher, scoring Sundahl.

RCC (7-2) scored five runs in the second inning on five hits, to lead 5-2, but Mt. SAC crawled its way back into the game with two more in the fifth, to trail, 5-4.

After two more Tiger runners crossed the plate in the sixth to lead, 7-4, Mt. SAC, came back again with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie it at 7-7.

Highlighting the inning was a two-run single by Brown.

Mt. SAC will host San Jacinto this Thursday at 6 pm at Mazmanian Field.
