Mounties Fall to Mt. San Jacinto, 6-4

(Walnut) By John M. Sherrard – After making its longest road trip of this years' schedule, the Mountie baseball team came up short in the second game of the season, 6-4, to Mt. San Jacinto College Tuesday afternoon.

Mt. SAC will next play host this Thursday, Friday and Saturday with games against Victor Valley (0-1), 2pm; Canyons (0-0), 2pm; and Glendale (1-0), Noon respectively. (Records are as of Wednesday Feb. 3.)

Leading the way for Mt. SAC (1-1) was freshman shortstop Michael Smith (Tulsa Memorial HS, Tulsa, Ok) going 2 for 3, including a run scored. Pitcher Logan Muratalla (San Dimas HS) came in to relieve the final three innings of no-hit baseball to keep the Mounties in the game. The freshman also struck out four San Jacinto batters.

After Mt. SAC took a third-inning 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by freshman right fielder Antonio Muniz (South Hills HS), the Eagles scored four runs in the fourth inning and the Mounties were never ahead the rest of the way.

However, Mt. SAC did tie the game up in the fifth inning, 4-4, on three unearned runs.

Muniz reached first on an error by the San Jacinto left fielder, scoring Smith. After sophomore catcher Kory Brown (Charter Oak HS) reached first on an error by the shortstop, scoring Muniz. Sophomore center fielder Nate Alam (El Dorado HS) also scored.

Mt. San Jacinto (1-1) came right back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 6-4 lead, which they never relinquished.

The Mounties did rally in the top of the ninth, loading the bases, but did not score.

Freshman lefthander Steven Canedo (0-1) took the loss for the Mounties.
