Mt. SAC Volleyball loses second straight SCC match to LBCC, 3-2

(Walnut, CA) It's been a marathon of sets for the Mt. SAC Women's Volleyball team lately.

Friday (Sept. 15) was no exception, as the Mounties (5-6, 0-2) played their fourth five-set match out of the last five in a comeback that fell just short.

The latest was a 3-2 setback to host Long Beach City College by scores of 20-25, 25-19, 24-26, 25-23, 13-15.

In the last four five-set marathons, the Mounties played 20 sets, all in the last 10 days.

All of last year, Mt. SAC played only three five-setters in 24 matches.

Leading the way for Mt. SAC was freshman outside hitter Andrea Brewer (13 Digs) with 20 kills. Candace Ceballos and Zyra Green (3 D) added 14 and 10 kills, respectively. Ceballos also led with 24 digs, while sophomore setter Capri had 23 digs. Salmon again led with another career-high of 45 assists.

Freshman Naara Ortega added 10 digs.

Mt. SAC, which trailed twice in the match, 1-0 and 2-1, led early in the fifth and final set, 4-1, but a big 6-0 run by the Vikings gave them a 7-4 lead. A kill by Mt. SAC sophomore Leia Campbell stopped the run, to trail, 7-5.

Later in the final set, two kills by Brewer brought the Mounties within one point twice, with the latest a 14-13 score. A service error ended the match for the Mounties.

Mt. SAC will continue with SCC action on Wednesday (Sept. 20) at El Camino College.
